Google Translator

Post by Mr. O »

Hi,
Google just came out with a translator, at least as far as I can tell. I was wondering how well it works with English to Finnish. I tried to translate as many coolbasic pages as possible. There are a few problems where the translator doesnt translate a word and just puts it on the page. It works well enough for me to get what people are saying. If this translates to anything terrible please tell me, and please forgive anything the translator translates in a bad way. I pulled this off an email that was auto sent to me because I forgot my password. Here is the English first then what google translated it to.

Most of the translated text is very poor Finnish. It is understandable with the original text but out of context it would be little confusing or hard to understand. Few of the sentences are well translated though. I still would not recommend using it because Finnish and English are two completely different languages. Google translator might work better with Swedish or German because they have same kind of structure in sentences.

Well, the translation is terrible, but understandable. I'll try to translate the translation back to English (as far as you can translate mistakes from a finno-ugric language to a german language).
You recieve this notification, because you own (or someone pretending* is you own) requested new password will be sent to your account "CoolBasic Forums". If you haven't request this notification then take not to care about it, if you get it contact the administrators.

I tried to translate the text back to English and it sends back exactly what I put into it. I guess, real surprise, that the translator is meant to translate things to English, not the other way around. Translation software is not what it should be yet. I want to help with the project by as I don't understand Finnish I cant help with the project. I like the coolbasic language. It is easy to use and want to help with the next generation compiler. At the very least I know how well the translator works.

To give you an idea about the quality of the translation, the original text:
You are receiving this notification because you have (or someone pretending
to be you has) requested a new password be sent for your account on
"CoolBasic Forums". If you did not request this notification then please
ignore it, if you keep receiving it please contact the board administrator.

To use the new password you need to activate it. To do this click the link

... roughly translated into something like this:
You get this notification because you have (or someone pretension
has you have) requested a new password will be sent to your account
"CoolBasic Forums". If you have not requested this notification then please
take ignore about it, if you get it contact administrators.

You can use the new password you must activate it. You can do this by clicking the link
below.
As you can see, it's far from being grammatically correct, but the general message, I think, delivers.

The finnish people generally understand English quite well so I think the message could be better delivered if presented in its original form.
